What Do Today’s Jehovah’s Witnesses Really Think?
by minimus inwhen i was a witness i knew what my beliefs were and could defend my views, even if it really was wrong.
i understood jw doctrines .
i could define what the faithful and discreet slave was.

When I was in, in the good old days, you had brothers and sisters of the anointed who would give long answers in the Watchtower that showed how much they had drilled down into the meaning of the verses. As a result, I prepared my answers quoting references to (for example) Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words to draw out the meaning of a certain Greek word in a verse.
Nowadays I am told that the WT says the answers should not exceed 30 seconds, and that the first answer should be direct from the WT article, which is why I heard that they take the hand of the youngest kid in the audience who probably has been told what to say by one of the parents.
What I am getting at is that no one can express their deep study in such a short answer, which is why the average JW probably doesn't bother to study anymore.

What is the most insensitive thing an Overseer or Elder has ever said and done to you?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inwhat is the most insensitive thing an overseer or elder has ever said and done to you?
i have had many insensitive things said to me by some elders, but for some reason one self-righteous elder was always on my case.
he didn't like the fact that i missed meetings, didn't like that i never went out in field service, that i didn't answer at the weekly meetings and he didn't like that i carried my books and magazines in my hands and not a service/book bag.

I could probably give you a big list. I remember one elder greeting a sister who hadn't set foot inside the KH for months because of serious health and employment issues with the words "OMG, look what the cat's dragged in." Then face-to-face to her, "sure nobody here remembers you, you have been gone so long!"
She stayed for the meeting but never returned. Last time we met her in the hospital one day she said she was happy going to a local pentecostal church who'd welcomed her with open arms.

“Do not gaze about!”
by slimboyfat inso many changes in the 2013 nwt seem needless and spoil familiar phrases.
take isaiah 41:10 in the nwt classic rendering:.
do not be afraid, for i am with you.

Mind you Psalm 94:19 now reads as "When anxieties overwhelmed me, you comforted and soothed me."
Now that definitely reads better than the previous intimate description of "you fondled my soul."
Perhaps the word FONDLE had too many negative connotations for the WTS?

Memorial this year?
by carla inhow are they handling the memorial this year?
zoom or open kh's?
how do they reject the wine & bread in their own home?

I can't understand why each person has to have their own red wine and bread.
Surely (when we were in) we were always told that the other sheep were only there as respectful observers. So if they are zooming it either from Warwick or from a local location, can't the OS just observe?
As for putting emphasis on "passing the emblems" that is the height of nonsense. It makes a tradition out of moving a plate/tumbler back and forth! What is meant to be the spiritual significance of that? 🤷♂️🤦♂️

Wasn't there a recent WT article someone mentioned it on here recently where they link not giving up your worldly friends to sinning against God!?
Just found it after a bit of a search, December 2020, page 9. "There is a lesson for us today: No good can come from choosing as regular associates those who have a live-for-the-moment outlook. Being with such ones can ruin a true Christian’s viewpoint and habits. In fact, it might lead him to have a lifestyle that includes what God hates—sin. Thus, Paul strongly urged: “Come to your senses in a righteous way and do not practice sin.” - 1 Cor 15:33, 34."

C T Russell and His Numerology.
by Lost in the fog ini came across this older wt which i assume c t russell wrote the article.
unlike modern practitioners of numerology who calculate a value for each letter of the alphabet, russell simply adds up the number of letters in each word to arrive at [horror of horrors] 666.. and he lists there on the page each one of the organisations that must accordingly be part of the great harlot with 18 letters [in english] in their titles, because 18 is clearly 6+6+6 or 666!
strangely he hasn't stopped to think about another possibility for an 18 letter title.

Strangely he hasn't stopped to think about another possibility for an 18 letter title. It is "Charles Taze Russell" adding up to 18 letters or 666.
It'd make you laugh, except for the fact that people took everything Russell said as if it was coming from the mouth of Jehovah. A flawed way of thinking that permeates right down to this day.
